First Person View (FPV) Drones

First person view (FPV) flying is a way to pilot a drone as if you were on board the aircraft itself. It is typically done using a headset or display that shows a live video feed from a camera on the drone. This allows the operator to see exactly what the drone sees in real time, giving the feeling of being in the cockpit of the aircraft. It is great fun!

To achieve FPV flying, you will need a drone equipped with a camera and a video transmitter, as well as a display device such as a headset or screen to view the live video feed. The speed of a drone will vary depending on the model. Some drones are designed for racing and can reach speeds of over 100 mph, while others are slower and more suitable for aerial photography. The equipment you will need will depend on the specific drone you are using, as well as your personal preferences.

I enjoy building my own drones for both freestyle and racing. You can see the build photos in the reels further down the page. It involves a lot of soldering on a flight controller which is the heart of the drone.

A friend and I founded Pembroke College First Person View in 2018 during my final year of university. We trained new people to fly drones by holding indoor practice sessions as well as taking part in the IUDRO National Showcase in Coventry where we placed 2nd. I managed to claimed the title for fastest student pilot!
